Love & Literacy: The two greatest gifts we can give a child.

Myers Elementary School staff—teachers, aides, support staff and administrators continue to be committed to our mission: Love & Literacy: The two greatest gifts we can give a child. We know that learning is dependent on healthy relationships between teachers and students, and among students. Students need to know their teachers love them and are working to optimize their learning. Staff at Myers spend a great deal of time the first few weeks of the school year getting to know and developing healthy relationships with their students.

Learning is optimized in school communities where students feel physically and emotionally safe. The BASD Board of School Directors and Administrative Team continue to develop and implement strategies to keep all members of our school communities safe. We also work to develop awareness and responses to potentially threatening situations.

Myers Elementary School Community works to establish an environment where staff and students make choices that do not threaten the physical or emotional safety of others. This is the focus of our Schoolwide Positive Behavior Programs—BARK (Bellwood-Antis Recognizes Kids) with Respect and BARK Against Bullying. It is unrealistic to think there is such a thing as a bully-free school. All members of this school community are humans, and as you know, we humans do not always make respectful choices. Therefore, we all, intentionally or not, contribute in a variety of settings (media, government, families, community, sports, etc.) and ways to the learned and inappropriate behaviors students sometimes display, such as bullying. You will never hear me say, “Our school is bully-free”…there is no such school! However, I confidently say that when an incident of inappropriate behavior is reported, it is investigated, and based on what is learned, appropriate consequences are assigned. Our goal is never to punish a child. Our goals are to restore in the victim confidence she/he will be safe, and teach the offender how to interact respectfully with others.

We need your help! If you are concerned that any child in our school community is feeling threatened, please make a report to me (742.2272 or tlh@blwd.k12.pa.us). We all share responsibility for the safety of all our children in our school.

Dr. Terri Harpster
Myers Elementary School Principal
