Teachers and Administrators in the BASD are at work modernizing and aligning teaching and learning in kindergarten through twelfth grades

The district’s first ever instructional model is developed and will drive professional learning for all teachers and administrators. An instructional model is a framework for planning and teaching. Seven teachers will serve as part-time instructional coaches. Their role is to support teachers’ implementation of the instructional model by (1) co-facilitating professional development alongside principals, and (2) supporting teachers’ implementation of the model through planning, observations and feedback.

The Instructional Model—BA Future-Ready Citizen is organized into four components: Students, Rigorous Curriculum, Supportive Environment and Modern Learning. Each component is further defined with Big Ideas. For example, the Big Ideas for Supportive Environment include Positive Relationships, Learner-Centered and Growth Mindset. The Big Ideas become even more specific through a set of Classroom Identifiers, or Look-Fors and Listen-Fors. These Identifiers provide the criteria and language needed for K-12 modernization and alignment. Unlike past initiatives, this work will transform EVERY classroom, teacher, and therefore, student in the Bellwood-Antis School District.

What can students and parents expect this fall? Although the transformation is expected to take two to three more years, the professional learning to support the implementation of the instructional model begins in August, with concurrent classroom implementation. The first professional learning module is directed at the development of learner-centered environments across the district. As a result, all classrooms will become more student-focused.
